The Ranking survey question asks respondents to compare items to each other by placing them in order of preference. With this question type, you can:

  • have respondents rank multiple items in order of preference;

  • use your clients' help to decide which products to add to your store or offer first;

  • learn what products your customers love the most;

  • randomize answer order to avoid response bias.

In this article, you'll learn how we calculate and display the results of a ranking answer type of question.

๐Ÿ“Œ This type of question is available for Email or Shareable link surveys.

How is the score calculated?

Go to the Analyze > Overall results tab to see how many times each answer choice is selected by your respondents. Here, we automatically calculate your responses and show the most popular response by score first, allowing you to easily view and compare the overall importance of each item on the list.

The results table shows how many respondents placed each answer as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. These numbers are also presented as the percentages of all respondents who answered this question.

๐Ÿ’กIf your Ranking answer question has more answer choices, we'll also include them in this table:

You can see the already calculated scores for each answer choice on the right. Read on to learn how we generate these numbers ๐Ÿš€

Calculate the survey results

The score is calculated using the weighted average:

Where:

w = weight of the ranked position
โ€‹x = response count for answer choice

Each respondent's most preferred choice (ranked as #1) has the largest weight, and their least preferred choice has a weight of 1.

In our example, in which a Ranking question has three choices to order, weights are assigned as follows:

  • The #1 choice has a weight of 3

  • The #2 choice has a weight of 2

  • The #3 choice has a weight of 1

๐Ÿ’ก Let's check the score for Product 2. 2 respondents answered the Ranking question, and none of them placed Product 2 as their 1st choice (x=0, w=3), 2 of them placed this answer as their 2nd choice (x=2, w=2), and no one put Product 2 in the 3rd (last) place (x=0, w=1).

Using the above formula, the score is 2, because:

((0 * 3) + (2 * 2) + (0 * 1)) / 2 = 4 /2 = 2 .
