File upload question

Let respondents attach documents, images, audio, or video files to their answers

Written by Vlada

The File upload question lets respondents attach files to their survey response, for example a screenshot of a bug, a document, or a short video recording. Each uploaded file is saved with the response, and you can download it from your results.

📌 File upload is available in Email or Shareable link, Website or in-product, and Mobile app surveys. It's not available on the Free plan.

Add a File upload question

  1. Open your survey in the Create tab.

  2. Click New question and select File upload.

  3. Type your question, for example "Attach a screenshot of the issue".

  4. Go to the question's Settings to configure the options below.

Question settings

Number of files

Choose how many files a respondent can upload to this question, from 1 to 10 in a File upload limit section. The default is 1. The maximum depends on your plan (see Limits on each plan below).

Accepted file types

Choose which kinds of files respondents can upload. Document and Image are enabled by default. Audio and Video are available on Pro and Enterprise plans.

  • Document: .txt, .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, .pdf, .csv, .rtf

  • Image: .png, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .webp, .bmp

  • Audio: .mp3, .aac, .alac, .wav, .flac, .ogg, .opus

  • Video: .mp4, .mov, .avi, .webm, .mkv, .m4v, .wmv

Maximum file size

Each file can be up to 10 MB. On Pro and Enterprise plans, the limit is 50 MB per file.

Answer required and Wait time

You can make the File upload question required in Settings ➡️ Answer required.

When the question is required, an extra setting appears: Wait time (0–60 seconds). Wait time keeps the Submit button disabled for the number of seconds you choose, giving larger files (such as audio or video) time to upload before the respondent moves on.

  • Leave it at 0 if you expect small files, like images or documents.

  • Increase it if you expect large files or respondents on slow connections.

If an upload isn't finished when the wait time runs out, it continues in the background, but only while the survey is still open. If the respondent closes the survey before the upload finishes, the file won't be saved.

💡 Wait time is a trade-off. A longer wait gives big uploads more time to finish, but respondents who wait too long may abandon the survey. Choose the shortest time that suits the files you expect.

Customize the texts respondents see

There are three texts for this question that you can edit in your survey's design settings (and translate in multilingual surveys):

  • File upload placeholder: shown in the upload area before a file is added

  • File upload in progress: shown while a file is uploading

  • File upload waiting time elapsed: shown when the wait time has run out but the upload is still in progress

View uploaded files

Each successfully uploaded file appears in the Individual responses tab as a downloadable link, so you can open submitted files straight from your results.

Requirements for Website and Mobile surveys

  • Website or in-product surveys installed via the NPM package: version 29.0.0 or newer. On older versions, the survey is still shown, but the File upload question is skipped. If your survey logic depends on the File upload question, update the package before launching.

  • Mobile app surveys: Mobile SDK version 9.0.0 or newer. On older versions, a survey that contains a File upload question isn't shown at all.
