To set an audience for your survey, go to your survey's Target ➡️ Audience tab and select +Add audience. You'll see three options to choose from:
The choice comes down to one question: do you need to recognize the same person across browsers and devices?
Choose Visitors if the answer is no
Recognition is stored in the visitor's browser (local storage).
Best for most website/app feedback: website or app satisfaction, pricing page feedback, exit surveys, and quick polls.
Choose Users if the answer is yes
Recognition is stored on our servers, keyed to user_id, so the same person is recognized on any browser or device. Response history and frequency limits follow the person, so no one answers twice.
Best for onboarding and lifecycle surveys, recurring surveys on a set cadence, and account- or plan-level targeting.
💡 Both Visitors and Users let you collect and target attributes. The only difference is where recognition is stored, not how much you know about the person.
Choose Manual audience if you're working from a fixed list
Choose Manual audience (CSV upload) if you already have a fixed list of users you want to survey. It's server-side too, so the same cross-device rule applies.
